How College Students can get involved at the SJC

Written by Forrest Jensen, Fall 2023 Badger Volunteer

If you want to learn new skills for your resume, want to get your club involved in community service, or are looking for a break from campus life, the Social Justice Center has many opportunities for involvement.

Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to get involved in the community and can also be a useful experience to include on your resume.

Sign up to volunteer with the Social Justice Center as a front desk greeter, resource advocate, or a pantry volunteer.

Drop in at LGBT Books to Prisoners to help pick out and pack books!

Help with election campaigns by becoming a member of Progressive Dane, or start by coming to a policy or elections committee meeting.

Become a Badger Volunteer and spend a semester volunteering. Every semester there are opportunities with the Social Justice Center and LGBT Books to Prisoners.

Donating

If you have items you were planning to discard, or are a part of an organization that wants to fundraise, you could donate to the SJC.

The pantry is most in need of personal hygiene products, including menstrual products. Other needed items include socks and underwear, cleaning supplies, and laundry products.

At the end of a semester, consider donating your used class books to LBGT Books to Prisoners.

Both the SJC and LGBT Books to Prisoners also have wishlists!

Of course, you can always give direct monetary donations as well.

Attending Events

Want to get connected to the Madison community outside of school?

The Mutual Aid Network hosts a variety of weekly and monthly events that are open to the public.

The Madison Area DSA has trainings, direct actions/protests, and more, both online and in person.

Other Ways to Get Involved

There are still more ways students can get involved with the Social Justice Center and the different organizations located here.

Read and write for Red Madison, the Madison DSA’s publication.

Find housing for the next semester in a housing co-op. The Madison Community Cooperative provides affordable and collectively owned housing.

Become a member of the Madison Mutual Aid Network and get involved with timebanking, mutual credit, and more.

If you are looking for more opportunities or just interested in learning more, feel free to contact the Social Justice Center or any of the organizations located here.
