May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which is the perfect opportunity to remind ourselves and those around us about the importance of seeking help when needed. The good news is that there are community mental health resources available in Dane County for those who may be struggling with mental health issues. In this post, we’ll explore some of the resources available and how they can help.
Behavioral Health Resource Center (BHRC)
The Behavioral Health Resource Center (BHRC) is a voluntary person and family centered service designed to help Dane County residents access behavioral health services, regardless of insurance status, financial status, age, identity, ability or legal status. BHRC staff are available to help connect you to resources for your mental health and/or substance use needs. This is NOT a clinic, treatment provider, or crisis service.

Comprehensive Community Services (CCS)
This program offers a wide array of psychosocial rehabilitation services. These are services and support activities that assist CCS clients with mental health and/or substance use conditions to achieve their highest possible level of independent functioning and to facilitate recovery. Some services provided include psychotherapy, substance abuse treatment, peer support, physical health monitoring, and more.
Eligibility criteria: Dane County resident, eligible for medical assistance, have mental health or substance use diagnosis, functional limitation in one or more major life activities caused by mental health or substance use issues, need for psychosocial rehabilitation services, must have a current physician prescription for services
To apply for CCS services, call (608) 242-6415 to connect with a CCS Intake Worker at Dane County Department of Human Services. It’s okay if you aren’t sure that you meet all of the criteria – if you think do and you are looking for services and support with the challenges of mental/behavioral health and/or substance use conditions, you can learn more and get assistance with the process when you speak with the intake worker. Affordable Essential Healthcare
Clinics
Finding affordable healthcare can be a challenge, especially when you don’t have insurance or your coverage isn’t clear. Many hospitals and clinics have confusing policies, but there are organizations that can help make your options clearer. Additionally, there are many free or low-cost clinics in Dane County that offer medical care to those who need it. These clinics offer all kinds of services, from regular check ups to specialized care, like reproductive health.
The Wisconsin Free and Charitable Clinics provides a list of clinics all across Wisconsin where you can learn more about the services and eligibility requirements each clinic near you has.
Access Community Health Centers offer medical, dental, behavioral health care, and affiliated pharmacy services at 5 locations in the greater Madison and Dane County area. Their locations, hours, and services can be found on their website under the Locations tab to the right side.
Public Health Madison and Dane County website offers lists of free and lower cost clinics here. Additionally, they have resources for:

Sexual & Reproductive Health
Planned Parenthood – Madison South Health Center: This is a health center that offers a variety of reproductive related care. Services include birth control, men’s and women’s healthcare, STD testing, hormone therapy and pregnancy services.
